New York State Senator Carl Kruger (D), has introduced state legislation that would make it crime to cross the street while using a "gadget" while crossing the street. Talking on your cell phone, $100 fine. Using your I-pod or other music device, $100 fine.

"Government has an obligation to protect its citizenry," Kruger said in a telephone interview from Albany, the state capital.

Oh Really? I missed that one in Civics class. So if the government has an obligation to protect the citizenry, guess that means when I cut my finger while chopping onions I can file some sort of a claim against the government? After all they didn't fully protect me while I was chopping my onion.

This electronic gadgetry is reaching the point where it's becoming not only endemic but it's creating an atmosphere where we have a major public safety crisis at hand."

Ohhh, it's a crisis!!!! Oh me, oh my, quick save the pedestrians from the evil cell phones and I-Pods. Three people have been killed since September in Brooklyn, this is why he's trying to push this legislation. Three people in 5 months in Brooklyn, population of roughly 2.5 million people. I guess the thought never crossed his mind that there might be 3 careless or stupid people in his constituency? If you or I act careless and we hurt ourselves, that's life. Or in this case death. If the government is going to try to legislate every little thing that might cause injury or death, crimany that legislation will make the IRS Tax Code look like a short story.

"I'm not trying to intrude on that," Kruger said. "But what's happening is when they're tuning into their iPod or Blackberry or cell phone or video game, they're walking into speeding buses and moving automobiles. It's becoming a nationwide problem."

Yeah, there I was driving downtown and I had to dodge at least 13 people with headsets on, couldn't they hear my horn as I drove down the sidewalk? Seriously though, you want to use your phone/I-Pod/Blackberry/Video Game? That's cool by me, but realize you are ultimately responsible for yourself, not the flippin government. You become road pizza by walking out into the road without looking both ways (like your parents should have beaten into your earbud support) that's on you, say hi to Darwin for me.
