Well first there was the vote about a week ago to tell the Marines to leave, and to grant a parking spot and loud speaker permit once per week for Code Pink, in front of the Marine Corps recruiting office.
Well in an effort to try new and different things:
From the San Francisco Chronicle:
Berkeley to rethink its declaration against the Marines
So now they are "rethinking"? That is a bold jump since that would imply that they thought in the first place.
Council members Betty Olds and Laurie Capitelli proposed today that Berkeley rescind its letter to the U.S. Marine Corps that stated that the downtown Berkeley recruiting center "is not welcome in our city," and publicly declare that Berkeley is against the war but supports the troops.
Isn't that special. They are against the war but support the troops. Last week didn't sound all that supportive.
"If you make a mistake, like we did, you should admit it and correct it and move on."
I love this tactic, feign the caring and chastised look and feel, change your rhetoric just a tad to make people think that you have learned from your mistakes, and then maybe people will stop calling you bad names, maybe then they wont boycott your city, and maybe, just maybe you won't lose all of your city's Federal funding for your special programs.
While the truth of the matter is, they will still hate the Military and what it stands for. Their panacea doesn't include a military. But then they also apparently think they will be safe and sound in their little whacko heaven even if we didn't have a military, or if we weren't trying to fight this war.
History lesson: Back in the mid to late '90s what did we do to provoke and/or thwart Islamic Fundamentalists?
Answer: NOTHING
And what did we get?
- USS Cole
- Embassy bombings
- Diplomatic assassinations
- And of course 9/11. to name a few.....
Do they realize that if our military, if we, all of us, fail in this war (It is a war, it has been for 20 years, Iraq is just one battle in that war), that they love to hate, the only thing they and the members of their three ring freak show have to look forward to is the shear horror of knife sawing off their head? Again they show that thinking is not their strong suit, that being the case, how the heck are they going to be able to "re-think"?
Enough is enough, the people of Berkeley need to be the ones standing up and saying something. If the majority in that city support the council (which in reading the article it would appear not) then so be it. As I stated previously, pull out the Marines, the Post Office, any Federal presence at all. Remove all Federal Monies, earmarks, budget items, everything.
On the other hand, if the majority of the citizens of the city of Berkeley think that the majority of their city council is way out of line, then post haste, have a recall election to boot them out on their collective butts, while you are at it, pass a resolution stating that if they stay in town;
"they do so as uninvited and unwelcome intruders".
